The power of car engines in Moscow and the Moscow region is a multiple of the installed capacity of all power plants in Russia. Such data was given by Dmitry Onishchenko, director of the Scientific and Educational Center for Piston Engine Building and Special Equipment of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (REC PDS), speaking at the next meeting of the Sretensky Club.

The power of car engines only in Moscow and the Moscow region is a multiple of the installed capacity of all power plants in Russia. In order to convert all cars in the country to electric traction, it will be necessary to increase the capacity of all power plants in the country by an order of magnitude, which makes the idea of transferring all cars to electric motors unpromising.

Another problem that the specialist drew attention to is that currently there are no batteries whose energy intensity could be compared with the energy intensity of traditional types of fuel for piston engines. The ecological purity of electric transport is also questionable, since the expansion of not always environmentally friendly energy will be required to produce the necessary energy.

The development of the automotive industry should focus on two areas: reducing air pollution and improving engine energy efficiency. Recently, work has been actively carried out in the field of creating highly efficient power plants. Hybrid power plants in combination with a highly efficient piston engine are able to bring motor transport to a new technical and environmental level, allowing for a significant increase in energy efficiency.

The Sretensky Club unites experts and specialists in a variety of disciplines – from physics to philosophy and develops recommendations for solving problems of the economy and society related to the transition to the future.

The Scientific and Educational Center for Piston Engine Building and Special Equipment of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (REC PDS) was established in 2015 with the aim of developing and implementing innovative power plants in transport.
