SIBUR has begun construction of an industrial production of n-butyllithium, a key catalyst for the production of thermoplastic elastomers and synthetic rubbers, which will ensure the technological independence of the production of these products. This is stated in the company's message.
The project will be implemented at the Voronezhsintezkauchuk site using SIBUR technology. The plant's capacity will be 350 tons per year, and the project completion date is 2026. The volume of investments in the creation of a new production facility will amount to several billion rubles.
Until 2022, n-butyllithium was imported mainly from Europe. Launching its own production will help to offset the risks associated with the complexity of the logistics chain, the lack of licensors and the availability of this special component in general.
