More than 4 million 3D models of trees have appeared in Yandex Maps. Realistic green zones are now on the map of Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road and St. Petersburg, including Peterhof. This will help users choose a place to walk or evaluate the area when buying an apartment.

A neural network helps Maps to "green up" parks, squares and streets. Based on the satellite image, it determines the characteristics and coordinates of the trees. And then he puts in the right place a 3D model of a coniferous or deciduous tree, suitable in height and size of the crown. In green areas where trees are too dense, or near roads, the array is thinned out a little so as not to overload the application and not interfere with navigation.

The neural network has added 21 thousand coniferous and about 4 million deciduous trees to the map. Their 3D models are now available in 2,000 parks and squares in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as in the courtyards and streets of both cities. This is another step towards a new generation map where objects look realistic and recognizable.
